This is an excerpt from an email I got from a friend of mine who works on the base at Fort Hood.

We did not know if there was another shooter out there. I was hearing stuff from 1 shooters up to 5, running into the gate shooting gate guards, troops on the ground searching for snipers on the loose. Also on the news were shooting reports in a residential area on post which I can see from where I work. We were told to turn off the lights, lock the doors and turn off the ventilation and air since they did not know if it was a terrorist attack or not.

There were helicopters all over and also military vehicles, swat teams, police. I realized how much of a chicken I am. I could not leave to pick up my baby and nobody was allowed in.

She and her family are OK, but I can't imagine the terror they went through yesterday. My heart goes out to all of them. Peace on earth, guys. Let's work for it.

Yes, let's work for peace, and pray for the people who were injured. My husband is ex-Army, so this is a painful thing for him, and for me.

I just want to remind people that the actions of a few should not condemn an entire race or religion.

We were stationed overseas on 9-11. After that awful day, we saw terrible acts of retaliation against anyone that remotely looked or sounded like they were Arabic or Muslim, no matter if they were elderly, female, male, or young children. Just because of their name, their religion, or how they were dressed, they were beaten up, raped, harassed, firebombed, threatened at work - when those people had absolutely nothing to do with 9-11.

The Army Major at Fort Hood committed a true atrocity. Not only did he murder and injure people, but he also betrayed his fellow soldiers and the oath he took to serve our country. If he lives, I have no doubt that he will be prosecuted to the fullest extent.

I just would hate to see retaliation against other people because of this one man's actions.

I want to clarify some things from my last post.

My husband and I did not personally witness the acts of retaliation I spoke of - they were in the newspaper and on the news every night for many weeks after 9-11.

And the retaliatory acts were not committed by any US personnel, that I know of. The locals were doing those things. It was pretty brutal.
